Do Thermal Curtains Actually Save Money? What Facilities Managers Should Know Before Winter..

Heating costs are one of those line items that quietly creep up every winter, and most maintenance and facilities teams spend a lot of time chasing efficiency in all the obvious places - boilers, insulation, LED lighting - whilst curtains barely get a mention. That seems like an oversight, because a properly lined curtain is one of the simplest, least disruptive ways to cut heat loss in a building that already exists exactly as it is.
We'll admit we've got skin in this game (we make curtains, after all) - so let's stick to what's actually true rather than what sounds good!

Where the Heat Actually Goes
Windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in most buildings - considerably more than walls, per square metre. In older buildings especially, single or even double glazing simply isn't enough on its own once the temperature really drops. A curtain doesn't replace good glazing, but a well-lined one adds a genuine extra layer of insulation exactly where the heat is escaping.
What "Thermal" Actually Means in a Curtain
Not every curtain marketed as "thermal" is doing the same job. The meaningful difference comes down to the lining.
Standard lining adds some insulation and blocks a bit of light, but isn't designed primarily for heat retention.
Interlined curtains - a layer of thermal interlining sandwiched between the face fabric and the lining - trap significantly more air, and it's that trapped air doing the insulating work.
The fit too matters just as much as fabric: a curtain that doesn't fully cover the window, or that stops short of the sill, lets warm air circulate behind it and straight past the glass, undoing a lot of the benefit before it starts.

Why This Matters More Across Healthcare, Hospitality and Education
Buildings in our sectors tend to have larger windows, longer opening hours, and less flexibility to just "turn the heating down a bit." A cold room doesn't just annoy a hotel guest - it shows up in the review. "Room was freezing" is the kind of line that costs more than a heating bill ever could.
Care homes face the same pressure from a different angle: residents who can't simply add a jumper and move on. Either way, the windows are one of the few places real efficiency gains are possible without anyone noticing a thing changed - which is exactly the point.
Built Properly, Built to Last
It's the same philosophy behind our own solar investment at our Sutterton workroom - built properly, built to last, whether that's generating our own power or helping clients use less of theirs. We're with you from first site measure to final install, so getting a lining that's genuinely suited to a building - not just a generic upgrade - is part of the conversation from day one.

We’ll Tell You Where It Won’t Help, Too!
Measuring, manufacturing and fitting bespoke curtains is what we do and what we're known for. It's why we're always happy to have a straightforward conversation about where thermal lining would actually make a difference in your building, and where it wouldn't.
Thinking about winter costs already? Let’s have a conversation!
