Winter Ready: Getting Care Home Bedrooms Ready for the Colder Months

Anyone who's worked in a care home will tell you: residents feel the cold well before anyone else does. As the clocks prepare to go back this month and the evenings draw in, a bedroom that felt perfectly comfortable in August can start to feel distinctly less so by October - and that's before the heating bills even come into it.

We've written before about the curtains-versus-blinds debate for care home bedrooms (spoiler: the best rooms often use both), so this isn't a repeat of that conversation. This is about something more specific - making sure what's already on the windows is actually doing its job as the temperature drops.

Warmth Is a Dignity Issue, Not Just a Comfort One

It's easy to file "keeping residents warm" under general comfort, but for many people in care settings, feeling cold isn't a minor inconvenience. It affects sleep, mood, and how at-home a room actually feels. A well-lined curtain traps heat far more effectively than people expect, and it does it quietly - without a resident needing to ask for an extra blanket or a thermostat to be nudged up yet again.

That's a genuinely simple way to protect dignity: get the room warm enough that nobody has to ask.

Shift Patterns Don't Stop for Autumn

It's not just residents who benefit from the right window treatment as the year turns. Care settings run round the clock, and staff on night shifts often need to sleep during daylight hours. A well-fitted blackout lining makes a real difference there too, whatever time of day someone's trying to switch off.

A Quick Autumn Check Is Worth Five Minutes

Before the weather properly turns, it's worth a quick look at what's already hanging in your bedrooms. Is the lining still doing its job, or has it thinned after years of washing? Are there gaps at the edges letting draughts in around the frame? Would a resident who runs cold benefit from a heavier fabric, even in a room that's otherwise fine?

None of this needs to mean a full replacement programme. Sometimes it's one or two rooms that need attention, not the whole building.

Fire Safety Doesn't Take a Season Off

Whatever changes as the year moves into winter, one thing that never does is fire safety. Every fabric we supply for care settings is manufactured to BS 5867 Part 2, with the flame-retardant properties woven into the fibres wherever possible -

so it's doing its job just as well on the coldest night of the year as it was on day one.

Fifty Years of Knowing What a Bedroom Needs

We've been making bespoke curtains, blinds and cushions for care homes across the UK for over 50 years, and we manufacture and fit everything ourselves - nothing outsourced. If it's time for a proper autumn check of your bedrooms, we're happy to come and take a look.
