The Making of a Bespoke Cushion: From Fabric to Flawless

It's been cushions galore at PCI HQ lately - every project wants one… or one hundred! We're literally surrounded by cushion fillers right now! They've been so popular of late that we reckon they've earned a blog all of their own. So here it is.
A cushion looks like a simple thing, doesn't it? A bit of fabric, some filling, job done. But take a closer look at how a bespoke cushion comes together, and you'll find something far more considered - a small piece of craftsmanship that's been measured, cut, stitched, and finished by hand.

It Starts With a Conversation
Every bespoke cushion begins long before a single stitch. We talk through the brief - the setting, the look, the level of wear it needs to stand up to. A scatter cushion for a boutique hotel lounge has very different demands to one in a busy care home day room. Getting this right from the start is what "tailored" actually means.
Choosing the Fabric
This is where function meets beauty. We help you choose a fabric that suits the space and the job it has to do - colour, texture, durability, and, crucially, safety.
For commercial and healthcare settings, that means inherently flame-retardant fabrics that meet BS 5867 Part 2. The safety is woven into the fibres so that it won't wash out - no matter how many times the cushion is cleaned. Style and compliance, hand in hand.
Measuring and Cutting
Precision is everything here. Each piece is measured and cut by hand to exact dimensions - because a cushion that's even slightly out will never sit quite right. Patterns are matched carefully so stripes line up, and prints flow seamlessly across the seam. It's the kind of detail you don't notice when it's done well, and can't unsee when it isn't.

The Stitching
Now the skill really shows. This is where Di and Selina come into their own - two of our cushion-making experts who genuinely love the craft. Each cushion is stitched by hand, with close attention paid to the corners, the seams, and the finish. Piped edges, zip closures for easy laundering, removable covers - every element is chosen for both how it looks and how it'll hold up to daily life.
For Di and Selina, it's the intricacy that makes the job so satisfying; the fiddly details are exactly the part they relish!

The Finishing Touches
Finally, the filling. The right fill makes the difference between a cushion that keeps its shape for years and one that flattens within months. We fill, plump, and check each one - because the last 5% is what separates good from flawless.
Ask Di or Selina, and they'll tell you there's nothing quite like seeing a beautiful cushion plumped, finished, and ready to take its place on show within the project.

Made Here, By Us
What ties it all together? It's all done in-house. With over 50 years of experience, we manufacture and finish every piece ourselves, nothing left to chance. That's how we guarantee the quality that goes out the door carries our name with confidence.
Fancy Something Made Just for You?
Whether it's a handful of scatter cushions for a scheme you're working on or a full contract order, we'd love to make something perfectly fitted to your space.
